Classic vs Showdown
Classic uses a full slate of games; Showdown uses a single game. Here is the difference and what changes when you build for each.
Daily fantasy contests come in two main shapes. Classic builds a roster from a full slate of games. Showdown builds one from a single game. The scoring is the same; the pool of players you choose from is what changes.
Classic: a full slate
In a Classic contest you pick from every game on the slate. A Sunday NFL main slate might have a dozen games, which means hundreds of players to choose among. Your roster fills a set of positions, stays under the salary cap, and can draw players from any of those games.
Showdown: a single game
A Showdown contest is built from one game. Because only two teams are playing, the pool is small, and every roster in the contest is choosing from the same handful of players. That changes the feel of it: with fewer options, lineups differ in finer ways, and the result often turns on one or two players having a big night.
Showdown is why you can enter a contest on a standalone game, like a Thursday or Sunday night matchup, when there is no full slate to build from.
What changes when you build
- Player pool: Classic draws from many games, Showdown from one.
- Roster shape: the two formats use different slots, so a Classic roster and a Showdown roster are not interchangeable.
- Variety: with a small pool, Showdown lineups are closer together, so small choices carry more weight.
Both build the same way here
Whichever you enter, the building step is the same loop: download your entries file, fill it, upload it back. The Lineup Generator builds Classic from a full slate and Showdown from a single game, for NFL and MLB on DraftKings and FanDuel. If you are heading straight for single-game contests, the Showdown lineup builder page covers that format on its own.
When each shows up
Classic contests run whenever there is a full slate: a Sunday afternoon in the NFL, a busy night of baseball. Showdown fills the gaps around them. A standalone game, like a Thursday or Sunday night matchup, has no slate to build a Classic lineup from, so the single-game Showdown format is what is on offer. If you only ever see one game on the schedule, you are looking at a Showdown.
The roster is not interchangeable
One practical point: a Classic lineup and a Showdown lineup use different roster slots, so you cannot take a Classic build and drop it into a Showdown contest. Each format has its own file and its own shape. When you download your entries file you pick the sport and the style, and the file you get back matches the format you chose.
Build Classic or Showdown
The Lineup Generator handles both: a full-slate Classic lineup or a single-game Showdown one, for the contests you enter yourself.
