Playing responsibly

Responsible Play

Set your limits before you start, keep it entertainment, and know where to get help. Daily fantasy is 21 and up, and not for everyone.

Daily fantasy and player props are games you play with real money, and like anything you play with real money, they are only worth doing if they stay fun and stay affordable. This is the plainest advice on the site, and the most important.

Set your limits first

Decide how much time and money you are willing to spend before you start, not in the middle of a session. A limit you set while things are going badly is not really a limit. Pick a number you can lose without anything in your life changing, and stop there.

Only ever play with money you can afford to lose. Never use money meant for rent, food, bills, medical care, a loan, an emergency fund, or anyone who depends on you. If you find yourself trying to win money back, that is the signal to stop, not to keep going.

Keep it entertainment

Daily fantasy should be entertainment, the way a night out is. Most entries do not cash, and a small number of entrants take most of the prize money, so going in expecting a profit is going in wrong. Treat the cost as the price of playing, not an investment. If it stops being fun, or starts feeling like a way to fix money problems, step away.

Who can play

This site is for adults 21 and older, in the United States, and not everywhere even then. If you are under 21, this is not for you. Research is one thing and money is another: you can read and learn without putting any money down.

Where to get help

If gambling is becoming a problem for you or someone you know, help is free and confidential.

  • Call or text 1-800-GAMBLER.
  • Call or text 1-800-MY-RESET.
  • Chat with the National Council on Problem Gambling at ncpgambling.org/chat.

There is no shame in using any of these, and no reason to wait until things are bad. Many sportsbooks and fantasy sites also offer tools to set deposit limits, take a break, or self-exclude. Our terms and disclosures spell out who can play and where.

Signs worth watching for

A few signals are worth taking seriously, in yourself or someone close to you. Playing more than you planned to. Chasing a loss with a bigger entry to win it back. Using money set aside for something else. Hiding how much you play. Feeling anxious or low when you are not playing. Any one of these is a reason to pause and use the limits and the help above, not a reason to push on.

Tools the sites offer

Most sportsbooks and daily fantasy sites have built-in tools to help you stay in control. You can set a deposit limit, set a time limit, take a cooling-off break, or self-exclude for a longer period, usually under the account or responsible-gaming settings. Setting a limit while things are calm is far easier than trying to stop in the middle of a session, which is the whole reason the tools exist. Using them is a sign of control, not a lack of it.

Look without putting money down

Swipe is a free deck of today's lines, and making an account takes no card. You can research all of it before deciding whether to play at all.
